One Saturday afternoon in September 1940 my mother and I went to the cinema to see "Wuthering Heights".

Suddenly there was a great deal of commotion. The lights in the cinema went out and heavy crashing sounds could be heard from outside.

We all had to evacuate and on leaving the building the noise of anti-aircraft fire was deafening and we could see the smoke from fires all around us.

We arrived home safely by bus to find that buildings had actually been destroyed in our old East Ham High Street. Woolworths was gone (what would we do without it?) That was the beginning of the blitz for us.
