When I was eight years old my father died and there was no income so mum had to go to work. The reason for this was that the rent was 18 shillings, and she was only allowed 10 shillings for me. So she went to work at Briggs Motor Works, where they were making the airplanes.

As an eight year old I was left to get myself to school and one morning at eight o'clock I was brushing my teeth and getting ready to go to school, when a Doodlebug came over and dropped on the Heathway Shopping area that ran parallel with my road. The whole of it was destroyed so I thought that I had better go to the Briggs Motor Company to ask to the commissionaire at the gates to tell my Mum that I was safe.

When the commissionaire walked up to my mother, she almost collapsed with fear that he was going to tell her the worst.

All of her colleagues held a collection for her in order to give me a treat.
