Rose and her sister Jose were first sent to Chester where they were both very happy. Rose had her first toy there (Bat Ball) and Jose had beautiful clothes made for her. Jose went to school in the morning (in golf house) and Rose in the afternoon. Jose helped clean in the afternoon and got a hankerchief for helping. They were only there for six weeks. Their father brought them home in the dark. Their father was torpedoed and they were sent away to Wales where they were picked out like cattle.
In Wales, the first people who took them in were lovely. They made friends with an older girl who persuaded them to run away. They were picked up and taken to another home, that of Mrs. Williams who remarked that she wasn't 'common from Liverpool' and that she was a lady. She starved Rose but sometimes fed Jose. Rose's teacher noticed that she was malnourished and spoke to Mrs. Williams, but not much changed. Rose was so hungry she ate leaves.
They were brought home for a holiday and Rose wouldn't return, so she stayed through the Blitz.
They remember a neighbour, a warden, who went to the custom house and never returned.
At school there were seven coffins because a whole family were bombed. They did use shelters at first, but they stayed in the house under the table.
