This story was submitted to the Peoples War site by a volunteer from the 大象传媒 (Penny Ryan) on behalf of Maureen Butler and has been added to this site with her permission. Mrs Butler fully understands the site's terms and conditions.
In 1943-1944, the local children often played in the street. We would hear a noise like a motorbike coming from the sky. We would look up and see what looked like an aeroplane with fire coming out of the back of it. It was a flying bomb (V1 or V2s). We would watch and listen. When the sound ceased we knew it was going to drop. If the sound continued, we would continue play. If the sound stopped, we would dash inside, and dive under the Morrison indoor shelter. We put rubber teeth shields in our mouths so that if there was a jolt we would not bite our tongue or break our teeth. We would wait for five or ten minutes, or until we heard an explosion. Then we would all run back outside again and continue play as usual.
