This story was submitted to the Peoples War site by Wendy Young on behalf of Joseph Sibun and has been added to the site with his permission. He fully understands the site,s terms and conditions. I was in the Royal Army Medical Corp, and I'm going to tell you what happened to me on D Day. I was attached to the United States Navy, landing at 7.30 am on the 6th June, which was D Day, on an LST.
We disembarked all the vehicles and turned the ship into a hospital ship, opening two operating theatres. We took the wounded off Gold Beach and onto the ship. When we had our full compliment of wounded we set sail to England.
We had got out to sea when the Captain discovered that in beaching our craft ashore, we had damaged the ramp, and the two bow doors, so we were unable to lift the ramp or close the doors.
We continued the journey all the way up th channel, right up the Thames, until we reached Tilbury, and I felt we were very lucky to arrive safely.
