This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by a volunteer from CSV Actiondesk on behalf of Mr Stan Hilton and has been added to the site with his permission. Mr Hilton fully understands the site鈥檚 terms and conditions.

I joined the Royal Navy when I was 17 years old in 1940. The Drill Hall in Lincoln was used as the main recruiting office. My friend and I went together he was selected for the Air Force, although he would have preferred the Navy.

I went for training at Shotley, Harwich and trained on HMS Gangees for 10 weeks. I then went to Chatam in Kent for one week. Then I joined HMS Rother at South Bank Middlesborough, which was the first ever built river class frigate.

We had one week training on the Rother at the Isle of Mull, we then commenced convoy duties, which included Iceland, West Africa, Lagos and Russia. In between convoys we did U Boat patrols in the Atlantic.
