Richard Kittow
This story has been added to The People's War Website by CSV Volunteer, Ann Toomey, on behalf of the author, David Kittow, who understands the site's terms and conditions.
Richard Kittow was born at Bridge Street, St. Blazey. In 1936, when he was 19 years old, his father died and he took over the family butchery business.
There were four boys and one girl (Beatrice).
He continued to run the family business until 1939 and then he was called up and off he went for 6 years. He was a Private in the Eighth Army, driving vehicles. He was in the African and Italian campaigns.
In about 1942, while on leave, he got married to Phyllis Carne at St. Blazey Church.
He did not talk about his experiences in the war - the one thing that he did say was that when the guns went off, several miles away, the ground around them would shake.
