Mervyn Lemon

In December 1945, I had my 3rd birthday and I was going to have a party. My father had been killed 3 months before I was born so I was brought up by my mother and grandmother. For a special treat my grandmother said we would have bananas and custard. Everyone enjoyed them very much and thought we must be very rich to afford them!

When I was 5 I was given a banana to eat, it tasted very different from the bananas and custard I had for my 3rd birthday party. I then discovered that what we had then was in fact thinly sliced boiled parsnips sprinkled with sugar!
