My most vivid wartime memory dates from 1943 when the Germans were bombing Stafford Street, Fraser Place and other roads just off George Street. I was aged 15 at the time and working in the Co-op on Loch Street. I worked in the Climax Department where we ordered cheques.

I came into work one day and all our windows were blown out. A bomb had fallen in the next street and all the staff had been sent home. We walked down George Street and there was rubble everywhere. In Stafford Street there was a bath caught three floors up. Someone had been bathing when the bombs hit Aberdeen.
