‘There were 2 big reservoirs above our village of Stockbridge just outside Sheffield. We used to sit on the banks and watch the massive bombers fly very low and drop things. Much later we relised these were the man practicing for the Dam Buster raid.

‘Soon after the raid they put massive girders in front of the dam and suspended concrete pillars from the girders in the water. We were told these were to stop the Germans attacking our dams and flooding Sheffield.’

This story was submitted to the people’s War site by a volunteer from CSV Oxford on behalf of Joy Freeman (Nee Burrows). She has given permission for the material to be edited and published.
