Memories of Time in Land Army, West Mersea

When I was 14 years old I reported to the police station and I was trained to be an air raid warden. At 17 years old I went in the Land Army and was sent to Colchester to be trained. I was posted to West Mersea to a Hostel in a big house, there were 48 of us. Buses collected us at 6.00 a.m. and brought us home at 6.00 p.m. We worked on farms all over Essex. There were always problems accessing West Mersea because the road was closed at high water.

I met my husband at Harwich and we married whilst I was in the Land Army in 1944, he was a Petty officer in the Navy. There was no married life for two years until he came home in 1946. He developed Crohn鈥檚 Disease and he died when he was 49 years old.
