When the buzzers sounded I went into the air raid shelter. One night a bomb dropped in our street and I said to my mother ‘when the mist clears I will go and see what damage it has done to our house’. When I did go I found that I could not get in because the back way was all down and I could not get in the front way either. So I went back to the air raid shelter. When I came out of the shelter I had to go into the chapel at the top of the street until I could get into the house. When I got into the house a lot of soot fell down and I was covered with soot I thought it was never going to be quiet for the guns were going one after the other. I felt that I was never going to come out of the shelter alive but when I did come out I think that we thanked God for being so kind to us and bringing us out alive. It has made a big difference to me because I went to live with my Grandmother.
