This story was heard as part of a reminiscence project at Myrddin Day Centre, Carmarthen. It is contributed to the People's War website with the author's permission.
We were up at five because there was always plenty to do before school. I would get the cows in for milking and sometimes see to the rabbit traps that we had put out. If we caught any, we would deliver them to the shop on the way to school and somebody from Neath would pick them up for half a crown each.
On the way home, we'd pick up paraffin or a wet or dry battery for the radio and such like. we had to walk half a mile, rain or shine, to get water - no tap in the house of anywhere nearer.
Brechfa, our village, hasn't changed much. I live now where the blacksmith used to live. When we went to school, cold and tired, carrying our gas masks, we'd call at the smithy to warm up.
