At the end of the war I remember someone coming to the door and asking my mum what she could do or make for the Birstall Street Party.
The tables were put down the streets.
After jelly, cake, etc ... there was dancing and it was here that I first learnt how to do the Okey Cokey.
We danced where two roads crossed and this made a bigger area for all the dancers.
There was a half buried air raid shelter - the top of the shelter was concrete and this roof made an excellent 'stage' where we watched a magician and other performers.
