This story has been submitted by Alison Tebbutt, Derby CSV Action Desk, on behalf of Freda Harris. The author has given her permission.

In addition to the hazards of working at Aycliffe (Munitions Factory) there were also many side effects. In my case it was not long before I had to have all my teeth out and I also had quinsies. My skin turned yellow and had numerous blemishes and my hair turned green.

Imagine the demands there would be nowadays for counselling, pension, compensation!

My sister, Mrs D. Hutchinson of Aycliffe contracted gingivitis while at the munitions factory. We both attended the reunion a few years ago.
