This story was submitted to the People’s War website by Vivian and Darren, pupils from Teversham Primary School on behalf of Vera Morgan and has been added to the site with Vera Morgan‘s permission. Vera Morgan fully understands the site’s terms and conditions.

Vera lived in Teversham. She went to school from Teversham to Bottisham. Vera went on the bus to go to Bottisham. Vera lived in the High Street in Teversham. In her spare time she did dancing and knitting to make her family’s own clothes. Clothes were rationed as well as food. Her dad was a home guard. She had 2 brothers, one of them went to join the RASC and the other brother went to REME. Also Vera had a bigger sister. She was the youngest of all the brothers and sisters.
The Territorial Army came with search lights. Vera wasn’t evacuated though some of her friends got evacuated from London to Teversham. She felt sad when she heard the war was going to start. Vera’s mum used to do a big wash once a week, they used big tablets of soap. She lived in a 3 bedroom house. To keep warm they would have pixies — a hat.
They had school dinners with a small bottle of milk. She said that if you relied on ration books then the food wasn’t too good. At that time they didn’t get sweets, oranges or bananas. When the war ended children would buy sweets until the shops were empty. Her mum used to make cakes and she also collected things. They used to put eggs in ice cold water to preserve them. They had to grow their own vegetables because the farmers had to grow vegetables for the forces. Vera and her family kept chickens, they were never short of eggs. Also people used to hunt wild rabbits to eat. People used to put butter in their sandwich if there was any and they used to have little bars of Cadburys chocolate, toffee and boiled sweets.
She liked Vera Lynn singing.
A bomb was dropped on Fulbourn. Vera’s big brother worked in a German hospital. The hospital was made of concrete.
