My father came home on a 48 hours pass to find his family, myself aged 1, my sister aged 6 years and my mother, all down with german measles. He returned to barracks to be told that he could not stay because of the possible infection of the camp. He came home again and looked after us and then he went back to Dover Barracks with the unit.

The remnants of his company were put on a boat whilst he had been at home during the incubation period.

The ship was torpedoed and lost with all hands so my father was saved by the illness.

He died in 2002 aged 96 years.
