I was a heliograph and flag lignalln and laying telephne cable from kloren back we had no reaction at that stage. i was also trained on a lewis gun, our main guns 18 pounds and 4.5,klowiligen were bailt in 1909. thus we were unprepared for war. july 1940 we shipped to the middle east and were bombed off masures by planes. we dug our gun in around mere matich western desert and in dec 1940 we went into action at side barraur, ration were sparse bally beef and hard tack, water rationed so no wash or shave, infection with lice, fles and millions of flies, a few glovter gladior ba planes above us, we now had ration, i was then a front line op signaller we defended the army in libya- in 1941 when the afria goup arrived in the desert things got much worse. we did get the occasional change of clothing, but always some oneelses to big or to small to be frank we strank. when we supponded around arch i had to go with an op officer in the forward battle tank we were hit several times and rocked out a few, attacked by ilukan etc etc but were very lucky the regament had many killed and wounded. 1942 april we were shipped back to india and into burme. april 1944 i came back to england still an op signaller, joined a small parachute unit in from air borne division, we were sent to norway on ve day and i was demobled in march 1946 suffuring from bad hearing and bad nerves. lucky me. i am 85 now.losing my wife was worse than all this, 5 years ago.
