On the night of May 8th 1941 or2 the air raid siren had sounded and as usual my brother and I along with mother and the lady from next door were sheltering under the stairs, we had an Anderson shelter in the garden but seldom used it. Father was standing at the front gate as usual. Suddenly there was an enormous explosion and the house shook, a few moments later Dad came in and asked where the garden spade was as a bomb had demolished two houses quite close by. At this point the lady from nextdoor said "Oh Mr ..... could you go and see if my budgie is alright to which Dad replied " **** your budgie I'm digging out people."
Next morning it was off to school as usual with a minor diversion to see where the post office had been, up the road to be confronted by a huge crater stretching right across the road, A policeman asked where we were going and on being told "school" he directed us down the side of the nearest house to the back garden where a second policeman was lifting each school boy over the fence into the next garden, then back out of the front gate past the crater. When we returned home in the sfternoon the crater was already filled in.
