I went to Knapp Road School from 1943. Some time in 1944 I was on my way to school when a V2 hit the school, bang in the middle. When I got to the flattened site, there were dead bodies all over the place and a ARP man told me to go home. I asked how maney dead there were and he replied, 'About 500 bodies are here.'
It was not untill 1990 I found out that the school was half-filled with the dead from the London Blitz, and the other half were from our classrooms.
When I think about it, I remember the teacher telling us. We had said there were people asleep in the next classroom, and she told us that they were the fire servicemen who had been on duty all night and so they had to sleep all day.
