I was the wireless operator of HMS Basset, the senior ship of convoy, which went through the channel at the beginning of the Battle of Britain.
The convoy, call sign 'Pewit', was badly beaten up and Basset finished the day taking a German Pilot and an English Pilot (who died last year) from the sea off the Isle of Wight.
