I remember that the roof blew off our house 5 times during the war. We had a Morrison shelter indoors and slept in there for the duration of the war. One time, the wall of the room fell on the Morrison shelter; luckily, no-one was hurt.
We had a white terrier dog and one morning found him in the fireplace, covered in soot.
I can remember standing in the dining room when screaming bombs landed a few roads away. That was VERY frightening.
When we walked home from the cinema at night, we had to avoid the shrapnel from our guns falling around us.
I used to travel from Croydon to London to work in a chemist鈥檚 shop in Walworth Road.
One time, going to work, I was knocked down by a flying bomb when getting off a bus. I then got on a tram and my speech was all backwards as I asked for my fare!
