My father, Alexis, being too old to be enlisted into the army for active service, joined a fire watching team operating at an industrial estate in Kingsbury, North London. I think the name of the road where the factory was situated was Honeypot Lane. His task was to do a duty most nights of the week keeping an eye on a particular factory, watching out for incendery bombs etc dropped by the Germans. On many nights I would go with him although I was only a young child of some seven years old. I recall during the blitz of London standing on the roof of the factory, and seeing London burn. The sky was lit up almost like daylight with a bright intense orange glow, and I have a recollection that it was bright enough to read a newspsper, although we were some six or seven miles from the centre of London. Fortunately, being young at the time the horror of it all never dawned on me, and it was only as I grew up that realisation set-in. To me it was exciting..........
