Annie was 8 years old in Clogher, County Tyrone when a flat-bed truck passed with GI's at the bottom of their lane. A yank leaned out and said, "Hey, kids, d'ya want some candy?" Not knowing what candy was, Annie and her sister accepted, thinking, "I don't know what candy is, but it looks an awful lot like sweeties." Grabbing their goodies, they ran back to the farm and showed them to their dad. Their dad, being suspicious, took the sweets off them, and binned them in case they were poisoned. So went Annie and her sisters first change of eating sweets for the first time in 3 years.

Message 1 - Cheated out of Sweets

Posted on: 22 February 2005 by Audrey Lewis - WW2 Site Helper

Dear Brian,
I had a dad like that. Too bad Annie didn't get her sweets. It was a funny world in those days - kids had to put up with a lot of things.I hope she made up for it after the war?
Thanks for letting me read your story.
Regards,
Audrey Lewis
