My name is Bert Maskell. I was born in 1924. When I was 19 I joined the army. One of my jobs was to drive a lorry carrying armoury from England over to France. Once I reached France and my destination point I then became involved in the fighting. Whilst fighting I was shot in the left leg just under my knee, the pain was unbearable. Due to me not being able to carry on in the war I was brought back home and treated in England. I continued to stay in England while I recovered. Once I was able to re-join the war I was sent to India then straight on into Singapore once again driving the Lorries. The war was a varied experience for me; sometimes I enjoyed being part of the war other times I just wanted to get out, mainly once I was shot.
I remember fighting on D-Day. All of our spirits were down; it was the worst day of the war. I thought it would never end
After the war had ended I came back home, married and managed to settle down and enjoy the rest of my life in a calm society of a world with no war.
I was awarded a medal for taking part in the war. I use it as a reminder of how my life was like in the war and I am proud to have been serving in the war for England and being part of such a great triumph.
