Living in Bourton-on-the-Water during WW2, and an AFS (Auxiliary Fire Service) Unit was formed. I was made (at the age of 14) the messenger boy. As nobody hardly had telephones in those days.We had a telephone, and received the calls. I was volunteered. As they had a fire - bell, but when rung, the Home Guard turned up! Bourton had a big Car and trailer pump (Reg. No COE 402)and the AFS was regularly called out to various places that had been bombed, including Birmingham, Coventry, Bristol, Cardiff and Plymouth.
