Born in 1941 in Cape Town, father (Geoffrey) was in the Coastal Defence Force in this area. This was the equivalent to the local defence volunteers (Home Guard) in England. The Coastal Defence Force were to keep an eye on the coast line around Cape Town in case the German or Japanese navies decided to attack South Africa. With the fall of Singapore and Hong Kong and the loss of Burma, the defence forces of South Africa and Britain were worried that the Royal Naval Base at Simonstown (on the East side of Cape Town) would be attacked by the Japanese.

Because it was not easy to get British goods in South Africa during the war the majority of industrial and consumer goods had to come from the USA or elsewhere.
