On Good Friday 1941, the German Bombers came round the outskirts of Coventry dropping incendiaries. We managed to get to the Anderson shelter but could hear houses collapsing all around. I could hear the stick of three bombs getting closer and closer and then remember the final one landing less than two doors away from us, destroying the area. I looked out to see the debris and saw a shed on fire, so i ran to get a bucket of water to put it out. As I waited for that final bomb to strike (which I knew would be close!), I thought to myself, 'I wonder what it will be like to be dead?'
I was hit in the leg by flying bricks, while my father had his head cut open. I also recall that a bomb splinter went straight through the shelter, just missing my head, before continuing through to the garden.
Another explosion went through into house blowing all the windows out and turning the kitchen light on! This obviously had to be turned out or we would be a clear target, so we had to run from the Anderson to the house.. fast! We were left with half a roof on the house. After the raid we were taken to Hersal School to get patched up.
