This story was submitted to the People's War site by CSV/大象传媒 Radio Nottingham on behalf of Patrick Bettson with his permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

I was about two years old and I can remember asking my mother what she was making. She was mashing something in a cup. She told me it was a banana and I ate it. Some years later she told me that actually it was a turnip grown on our allotment which she mashed and added a couple of drops of banana essence.
