In 1939 when war broke out I was still at school and we were living in Calne. Our bread and cakes were delivered by Norman Ford, with his horse and cart. Norman was a Territorial, and as such was immediately called up for war service. He said goodbye, sadly, to all his customers and, of course, to his horse and cart.
Remarkably, and happily, he returned at the end of the war, first doing his bread round again with his horse and cart, and then as time went by in a little van. Needless to say, we were all happy to have him home safely.
