We were on the farm in the St Johns area and money was extremely scarse and across the valley was a neighrbour selling war savings certificates.
This neighbour told my mother she wanted her to buy 5 shillings worth of certificates and my mother was more than willing, but she had no money. She didn't want to disapppoint the neighbour.
So the evening before she was to produce the money, two soldiers came to the door needing a nights lodging and there was an obligation to provide, but they had to pay. They paid two and sixpence each for their accomodation and that meant she had 5 shillings for the neighbour when she called the next morning.
