I joined HMS Peacock when my former ship, HMS Ramillies was 'payed off.' Its captain was Captain Stannnard, who was an expert on submarine warfare. He wrote a book about on the topic.
In 1945 we set off from Liverpool to 'work the ship up.' ie. Get her ready for sea.
We were part of a group of battleships which attacked several German U boats. At the time we didn't know whether or not we had hit the U boats. Later we were told that we had sunk two U boats. In January 1945 we sunk U boat number U1208 and in February 1945 we sunk U boat number U12o8. I have a framed photo of the Peacock with details of the U boats she sunk.
After this we sailed for the Far East but were turned back at the Suez Canal. There was much trouble in the Mediterranean. We were needed there as many illegal immigrants were heading for Israel. We were instructed to stop them. We caught a boat load once.
Soon after this the war ended.
