Father owned a bake-house in the village. During the war it was illegal to use sugar for baking due to rationing and as best could be done shops and bakehouses were checked.
Father made doughnuts and smothered them in sugar. He made only the best. The result was a summons to appear in court for the illegal use of sugar in baking.
As the case progressed, Father explained that he had not broken any rules as doughnuts were not in fact baked at all. They were boiled! He won the case and the village continued to enjoy sugared doughnuts!
