We had lots of ‘Aunties’ and ‘Uncles’ who were in the RAF. There was an airfield at Woburn Abbey and they used to visit us and bring us presents. We had records from famous singers of the time that had been autographed. Mother and Daddy used to go to dances at the airfield and Mother always brought back balloons for us.
Towards the end of the war one of the Uncles gave us an orange rescue dinghy which we filled with water and used as a swimming pool. It was wonderful fun.
Aunty Barbara was one Aunty. Mother took us to London to see her parents and her Mother tried to make us scrambled egg. It was horrid as it was made with dried egg powder and my brothers and I refused to eat it. Our Mother showed her how to make it properly but we weren’t allowed to have any of it. She ate it all herself and we were very upset that we didn’t have any because we had not been able to eat her attempt at using the powder.
We liked Aunty Barbara until my brothers showed her one of their white mice and she screamed and dropped it. We said she had hurt it and we didn’t like her after that.
My cousin was in the sea for three days after his submarine was torpedoed and he stayed with us for my father to help him recover, but I was not aware of why he came until some years later.
