My school was situated near the Forth Bridge in Edinburgh, a prime target during the War. So after assembly each day we were divided into groups and sent off to people who had agreed we could be taught in their homes, as it was thought small groups in different houses would be safer rather than all the pupils under the same roof. Difficult as this was, not only because of the threat of bombs but because of the distractions associated with being in a private house. I cannot recall any of my classmates who left school unable to read and write or do arithmatic. This was achieved without the aid of calculators, computers, lovely tables and chairs etc. We provided our own books, paper, pencils and pens. Our achievements were the results of discipline and teachers who taught because it was a vocation.
