I joined the ATS at 17 years old and went to Pontefract to recruit. I did basic training and became a PTI; I had to go to Camberley for the training. I was stationed at Torquay, Northampton, Sterling (I spent a lot of time in Scotland); they just kept me on the move from station to station.
We were training the new recruits. We even trained the Yanks when I was down in Torquay!
The food was good in some camps and awful in others. If the staff was short we had to help out in the kitchens!
I enjoyed being in the forces. I ended up at Chilwell in Nottingham. I then went down to Harscourt at Shrewsbury.
Enid my friend married Jack Simmonds, they then introduced me to Jack鈥檚 brother Tom, who was in the RAF. We were married in 1945.
