In OCtober 1942 Mother and I sailed out of New York bound for England having been in the States as evacuees since early February 1941 with my uncle, aunt and cousins in Boston, Mass. I was then 13 years old. We were both homesick and wished to aid the war effort. Our ship was the S.S. Hilary, a small merchant.
On board were amongst others Lord Roseberry's son Lord Primrose (aged 13), Lady Millington Drake and her 9 year old daughter.
The voyage took 12 days, due to severe storms and zigzagging to avoid U-boats. Mother and I were with Nanny Tritton from Billericay. Her two charges (boys) were allowed to travel home on a British warship as their father was an Admiral, also they had grown too old for a nanny.
At one time due to storms the ship was flooded in sea water up to my knees for about forty eight hours. We made good use of the ship's library - one bookcase. We avidly read the "Herries Chronicle".
On arrival at Liverpool the tugboats sounded their horns; we were delighted and so happy.
