It was beautifully done. The destroyer led the landing craft parallel to the French shore, then, at a signal, they all headed for the beach at top speed.
Suddenly their craft came under small arms fire from a house on the esplanade. The skipper did not seem worried until the dinghy was holed. He ordred the anti aircraft gun to fire on the house. A few seconds later it was a pile of rubble.
They dropped off their commandos then saw that another landing craft had been hit. 'Get a line ready' said the skipper, 'We'll tow her off.' There was a crash and a sickening lurch.
'We're holed' came a voice from forward. 'Cox make for home,' said skipper, 'quarter speed while I get the pumps going.'
They managed to crawl back, without an escort to navigate. Someone even managed some cocoa.
A few weeks later, Cox received a parcel. Inside was a medal. He didn't want it ,so he raffled it.
'Why didn't you want the medal Cox?' asked skip
'They were women in that house.'
'What did you expect us to do?'
'I dunno' answered Cox.
