I lived in London during the war and experienced many months of bombing every night. I lived in a block of flats at the rear of Kings Cross station. I was 19 at the time.
In September 1940 a bomb fell on our flats. We lost all doors and windows but managed to scramble out with no more than cuts from the glass. My parents decided to shelter every night at Camden tower tube station. The warning would go around 6 o'clock every evening and the all clear the next morning. My parents would walk to the underground with their blankets. Bad luck followed them there - they were sitting in one of the walkways to the platform and a bomb above sent debris rolling down the escalator and people just trampled over them!
In 1942 I was among the first female conscripts and chose to go into an anti-aircraft regiment plotting the planes (at night in an underground plotting room and above ground during the day). We used a piece of equipment called a predictor that guided the guns to where to fire. We had a very busy 4 years there but felt we were fighting back and getting our revenge!
