I was a flight engineer with I think it was 149th Squadron, part of 3 Group, flying Lancasters from Methwold in Norfolk.
We had been equipped to be able to bomb through fog or cloud. One particular day, I think about 14th or 15th of December, we set off to bomb Germany. We managed to take off even though the weather was bad. However it soon became clear that the Spitfires that we relied on for air support were unable to take off, and we were issued with a general recall. I think this was the only general recall in out whole tour.
Anyway, when recalled we had to jettison our bomb load so that we were safe to land. I recall on this occasion, our gunner saw a sudden clear patch in the cloud, and was able to see a boat on the water.
Many years later I saw a programme about the disappearance of Glenn Miller, and a navigator on the programme spoke of seeing a sudden clear patch in the cloud. When they said that the bombers must have come from Methwold, I realised that I must have been there. Sure enough, when I checked my log book, that was the raid we were recalled on.
The next day we went back and successfully got the target.
