My preparatory school was evacuated to Luscombe Castle near Dawlish, Devonshire. Above the castle was Haldon Moor and,at the time, a squadron of Hurricanes was stationed at an aerodrome on what is now a golf course. Early one morning I woke up and went to the wash-room,which was adjacent to our dormitory; I heard the sound of aircraft and looked out of the window and saw a German aeroplane, probably a Dornier, behind the Dornier flew a Hurricane and in front of the Dornier was another Hurricane and above was yet another Hurricane, there was no firing and clearly the British planes were forcing the Dornier to land. I called out to my friends to come and see - I was afraid they would think I had invented the episode. The three of us hung out of the window watching until they were obscured from view. We heard later that they had forced the Dornier to land at the aerodrome.
