I was just over seven years old when the milkman came to the door and told me and my mother that war had been declared.

Within days workmen had come to my village to cut down all the metal railings to be melted down and used to make guns and ammunition.

Soon some people came to paint a special yellow paint around the tops of stone pillars. The paint would change colour during a gas attack to tell us to put on our gas masks.

During the war a bomb dropped on a mountain near our village and everyone climbed up to see the crater it had made!
