Nan Hatton’s family home was in Mountnorris, Co. Armagh. At the age of eighteen she recounted how the sky would be bright whenever Belfast was being bombed. It gave her an eerie feeling. She believes the fact she was young meant she wasn’t particularly afraid. However, she felt a bit detached from the war: she was a student nurse in Dublin, and when at home in Mountmorris she was a bit removed from the conflict. People found out about the situation in Belfast and elsewhere through the radio and newspapers. Interestingly, the war led to a family reunion. An Australian Air Force member — she thinks he was a pilot — who was based in England came over to Northern Ireland searching for family connections. His name was Feenan and he was related to Nan’s family. She thinks that without the war, they may never have met.
