I lived in Park Road, half mile from the Whitehall Cinema. On Friday afternoon 9th July 1943, I heard an explosion and decided to go and have a look. I walked down to what we know as Robert Dyas, but it had been roped off so I was not able to pass through. We could see that a great deal of damage had been done to the Whitehall and Bridgelands next door and others.
My friend Roy Henn was working as a trainee projectionist on the day of the bombing. He had left the projection room for tea break, but he sensed something was about to happen and threw himself face down on the floor in the corridor. Fortunately he was one of the lucky ones and was unhurt. However, the following year he was called up for national service in the RAF. During training, they had a fire alarm practise and the noise this created had the effect of trauma resulting in flashbacks.
