I lived in Norfolk during the war and lots of soldiers came to a base nearby for rest and recuperation.
I was engaged to an American MP from Texas, a wonderful man, 6ft 3 inches tall and I was only tiny. He was based at Snettersham American base. I was so small and he was so tall that he used to put me on a windowsill at Hunstanton Station to kiss me goodnight. He looked just like John Payne the actor and was part Cherokee. He used to say that his bit of Indian was coming up on him so he鈥檇 go for a walk down the beach, a real gentleman
We used to go to the Kit Kat Dance hall where all the soldiers were, and there were more men than you could ever ask for
