One thing I remember is that in Second Ave Porthill, the Americans took over a big house for the officers I think. We used to stand in the street as they drove past in a big truck and they would throw chewing gum and nylons from the back of the truck, it was wonderful.
We had some children staying with us as evacuees and they all said how ill I looked, how pale and such. So they persuaded my mother to let them take me with them when they went hop picking in Kent and when I came back all fit and tanned my mother could hardly recognise me
