When I was a twelve year old boy, I lived in Rusholme. My dad was in the army, me, my three brothers and mum used to go down in the cellar for safety. One particular night a landmine had gone off on one area of the road and a bomb had gone off on the other end.
I always remember when the bombs went off, it used to whitewash all areas of the cellar, where the bricks had come up. That was very frightening for a twelve years old boy. I remember one morning going through St.Mary's hospital trying to get to my Grandma's. We cut through , and the nurses home had a direct hit. I remember the smell of burning and also the rubble that was scattered everywhere. I was escorted by a policeman through to my Grandma's.
I remember one morning a local sweetshop had a direct hit and mum went to help and told me to stay put. I didn't and picked up all the sweets from the jars on the floor and a policeman caught me and I trembled with fear (I was more upset to put the sweets back on the road). The policeman later explained that the sweets could have been contaminated and that was the reason he shouted.
I also remember hearing the sound of a dog whimpering under the rubble, the emergency services managed to track him down and discovered a young baby. If it wasn't for the dog the baby wouldn't have been saved.
