Canderel and Similar sources of sweetener have been a main item in my life since rationing started during the second world war of 1939.
There was never enough sugar, so thank goodness for saccharin which was used to sweeten tea and any other food or drink. Saccharin could be as sweet as you liked by using more tablets, and it did help to hide the lump of soda which was used in the family tea-pot to make the tea ration stronger.
I can still taste the soda now, and I must have a very clean inside! I still use all kinds of sweetener, but canderel is one I like least of all because it does not sweeten as much as the other sorts of sweetener to my way of thinking.
