On the day of the 3rd of September when war was declared I was with my aunt visiting some friends to villages away from were we lived. I was nine.
We were on the bus going home when the siren sounded as a warning of an air raid; I remember that I was half excited at being allowed to go into a public house and half frightened at the thought of German aeroplanes flying over head.
However, the all clear soon sounded and we all went home. Later on we learnt that it was a false alarm.
Unfortunately later on we had many real air raids.
