When the Merchant Navy national Standard is laid on the Drumhead before the Queen, who is the master of the Merchant navy and the fishing fleet.
It will be a true memorial for the merchant service
The standard was given to the Merchant navy Association in memory of
1. Cpt Frederick Alfred Armitage.
2. Colin Armitage.
3. Stanley Armitage.
Cpt Frederick Alfred Armitage was torpedoed when aboard the SS Scalaria.
The SS Scalaria was part of a convoy to protect an oil tanker. He helped save lives from the burning sea, for this he was awarded the MBE and the Lloyds medal(The VC of the sea).
Colin Armitage his brother was torpedoed off the African coast on the SS lulworth Hill.
The survivors from the SS lulworth Hill took to the lifeboats. The lifeboats were machine gunned by the Germans. 14 men took to a life raft and after 52 days adrift off the west African Coast only 2 survived, Colin Armitage and merchant seaman Cook.
Colin Armitage was awarded the George medal and the Lloyds medal (The VC of the Sea)
Their younger brother Stanley Armitage was on the SS Travaria which was sunk and he was lost.
The true essence of the merchant navy is captured in this recollection for that special breed of men, the Merchant navy, known as the fourth service and where the forgotten hero鈥檚 for so long of WW2
